To the Editor:

\J
\F1The Good Ole Boy\F0 by Florence King (April \F1Harper's\F0)
is an important contribution to applied anthropology. Its method for
deducing sexual inadequacy from the way a man gets on a bar stool
compares well with the classical methods of determining criminality
from skin color and commercial rapacity from the presence of a hooked
nose. The appearance of this study in \F1Harper's\F0 is a sign of
the recovery of this branch of science from its long decline dating
from the end of World War II. All enthusiasts for the field will be
pleased that \F1Harper's\F0 has overcome outdated liberal hangups
and fears of criticism for promoting group stereotypes, inciting
group hatred, and appealing to the prejudices of its readers.

As a further step, \F1Harper's\F0 might republish some of
the long out-of-print classics of the field from the late Reconstruction
period and from the extensive German and Russian literature of the
early twentieth century. Besides that, reader understanding would be
aided by an editorial explanation of which groups it is now OK to
treat in this manner.\.
